Abstract
ABSTRACT: Caffeine is a well-known stimulant that is added as an ingredient to various carbonated soft drinks. Due to its stimulatory and other physiological effects, individuals desire to know the exact amount of caffeine consumed from these beverages. This study analyzed the caffeine contents of 56 national-brand and 75 private-label store-brand carbonated beverages using high-performance liquid chromatography. Caffeine contents ranged from 4.9 mg/12 oz (IGA Cola) to 74 mg/12 oz (Vault Zero). Some of the more common national-brand carbonated beverages analyzed in this study with their caffeine contents were Coca-Cola (33.9 mg/12 oz), Diet Coke (46.3 mg/12 oz), Pepsi (38.9 mg/12 oz), Diet Pepsi (36.7 mg/12 oz), Dr Pepper (42.6 mg/12 oz), Diet Dr Pepper (44.1 mg/12 oz), Mountain Dew (54.8 mg/12 oz), and Diet Mountain Dew (55.2 mg/12 oz). The Wal-Mart store-brand beverages with their caffeine contents were Sam's Cola (12.7 mg/12 oz), Sam's Diet Cola (13.3 mg/12 oz), Dr Thunder (30.6 mg/12 oz), Diet Dr Thunder (29.9 mg/12 oz), and Mountain Lightning (46.5 mg/12 oz). Beverages from 14 other stores were also analyzed. Most store-brand carbonated beverages were found to contain less caffeine than their national-brand counterparts. The wide range of caffeine contents in carbonated beverages indicates that consumers would benefit from the placement of caffeine values on food labels.

OpenDNS > Get Started > Linux/Unix
Linux/Unix
Basic Instructions
Please write down your current DNS settings before switching to OpenDNS, in case you want to return to your old settings for any reason.
The DNS Server addresses for OpenDNS are:
- 208.67.222.222
-
- 208.67.220.220
Just add these two lines somewhere near the top of your /etc/resolv.conf:
nameserver 208.67.222.222
nameserver 208.67.220.220
Enjoy!
Using OpenDNS with DHCP
If you assign your computer's IP with DHCP, it probably overwrites your /etc/resolv.conf. Here's how to fix that:
-
Run: sudo gedit /etc/dhcp3/dhclient.conf
-
Change the prepend line to read:
prepend domain-name-servers 208.67.222.222, 208.67.220.220;
This will prepend the OpenDNS addresses to the top of the list. (You can also use "supersede", which will just use them.) You don't have to worry about the DHCP client overwriting settings on each reboot or lease cycle, and your ISP nameservers will still be used as backup.
Run: sudo /etc/init.d/networking restart
- Using Ubuntu? Check "Networking" to see if the changes applied correctly.
Go to "System –> Administration –> Networking" and click the DNS tab.
Visit http://welcome.opendns.com/ to test your new settings.
You should see the Welcome page from OpenDNS, as shown below.
Troubleshooting
If you see the Oops page, please try two more tests, in case the Welcome page was improperly cached.
- First, visit our demonstration site internetbadguys.com. If you were successful in switching to OpenDNS, it should be blocked as a phishing site. Otherwise, it will tell you that it's a demonstration site.
- Second, make a deliberate typo in the TLD, like craigslist.og and see if it resolves to craigslist.org. If you are using OpenDNS, you will be taken to the classifieds site. If you are not, you will get your default browser error page.
Still not working? You may need to restart your web browser and/or router.
Please let us know if you're still running into problems.

I’ve read stories about the sorrows immortals suffered because of how much they had seen over their long lives. What rubbish. I would trade my mortality for their immortality in a heartbeat if it meant another day with Catherine.
A scream rang out from downstairs. I smiled when I heard applause, my grandchildren now being praised by their mother as the scream faded to a whimper and the giggles were replaced by slurping sounds.

Firefox OS: Why My Hard Drive & Software are Obsolete - lifehack.org
Why not? Because for writers like me, and for many others, all the software and storage space you really need is now online. All that matters is that you have your browser — and at the risk of sparking another flame war, I recommend Firefox.
Need a word processor, spreadsheet, photo program, or really most anything useful? Old-fashioned desktop applications aren’t necessary anymore, for the most part. You can fire up your browser on any computer, and given a decent internet connection, you’ve got your entire OS and hard drive right there, from anywhere you log in."

WIRELESS: WEP vs WPA vs WPA2
Brute force time to break encryption:
WEP < 10 minutes
WPA - 21 character password > 4x10-20 years
WPA2 - more ...
The long answer starts in 1999 with WEP (Wired Equivalent Privacy), the oldest Wi-Fi protection standard. It failed to live up to its name. It sticks with the same key, making it relatively easy to break. Nowadays, WEP can be cracked in a matter of minutes.
The Wi-Fi Alliance developed WPA (Wi-Fi Protected Access) in 2003 to address WEP's weaknesses. Improvements included TKIP, which changes the encryption key for each data transmission.
The choice between TKIP (Temporal Key Integrity Protocol) and AES (Advanced Encryption Standard) is a choice between old and new technologies, respectively. So the short answer to your question is that AES is more secure.
WPA is compatible with many older access points and network cards. In most cases, only an update is required.
However, WPA was a stopgap measure. At the time, the Wi-Fi Alliance was working on its 802.11i standard. Released in 2004, it is commonly known as WPA2.
WPA2 uses AES for encryption. It is stronger than the RC4 encryption scheme shared by WEP and WPA. But AES requires modern hardware.
WPA2 should be your first choice. That includes AES. I have general instructions for a complete WPA2 setup on my site.
If your computers' networking components (Wi-Fi cards or USB adapters) don't offer WPA2 options, switch the setup to WPA. On your access point, that means TKIP. If the adapters on your computers allow only WEP, look for updates online.
Both WPA and WPA2 offer good security. WPA is theoretically breakable, but can be secure on a practical level. With a strong password of 21 characters or more, a WPA network can withstand an attack for years. Unfortunately, most people don't use strong passwords.
In either WPA or WPA2, your password is the weakest link. Make it as strong as you reasonably can.
Hard Drive Healthy?
Hard drives have a lifespan of three to five years. But I've seen some die after two years. I have a few that are still chugging along after 5 years. There's really no good way to judge how long one will last.
There may be signs, though. If you hear a popping or a cat-like sound, your drive may be failing. Problems starting Windows may also be caused by a failing drive. I had a drive that would disappear and then reappear in Windows Explorer. A few days after this started, it died.
Programs are available to monitor the health of hard drives. They use the drive's self-monitoring tools. HDD Health and HD Tune are two such utilities. They're free.
Advance notice is always helpful. But I wouldn't count on it. Back up your data. Remember the other kind of crash–when your laptop crashes to the floor. Those crashes come without warning. So, there's no substitute for backing up.
